Animal babies, just like human infants, are very delicate creatures. They need lots of care and attention. In fact, they need a very different kind of care than older animals require. A cat of two years needs different care than a kitten of two months. We know the needs of each stage of development for each animal type.
Birthing is not a service offered at our hospital but we do suggest that you bring your pet and new babies to see us very soon after giving birth. A full physical exam is needed as soon as possible. Parasites are especially harmful to younger pets and can be present at birth. During that first exam we will assess the pet's need for parasite control.
At the initial visit we decide on a course of vaccinations. Again, animal babies are just like human babies in that they are quite susceptible to virus and disease. Therefore, we want to get them vaccinated as soon as possible and as soon as they are ready. We do not start a course of vaccines, however, before a pet is ready. For different pets, that point of readiness comes at different times. This depends on breed, size, health and environment. As a full service holistic pet care facility, we will look at all of these issues before administering anything. Babies need to be examined and assessed by a doctor as soon as possible. We want to start them on the path to health and energetic longevity.
Heartworm is a major issue for both cats and dogs. One of the things that we will be looking at during that first exam is whether your pet is ready to be given a heartworm preventative. This is quite important.
